The Pikeman Challenge

The Pikeman Challenge. Basically it will consist of a 100km trek over historic walks within County Wexford and will last for 4 days from 21st August to 24th August. The beauty of this venture is that it gives other sporting organisations or charities etc an ideal opportunity to raise funds for their own organisations as well. For further information, please contact William Murphy at 087-9293061, Joe Hore at 087-9672040 or Richard Murphy at 087-6680630. Full details of the walk are available on the very comprehensive website at www.pikemanchallenge.com

All County Hurling Leagues
Our Senior team qualified for the ACHL Premier B Division final after beating Naomh Eanna on Saturday night in Pairc Carman on a score line of 2-12 to 0-8. The Gorey lads played with the aid of the gale-force strength breeze in the opening half, which meant our lads had a lot of early defending to do. We got the opening 2 scores of the game through Barry Goff and Shane Howard before Gorey got the next 3 points. Jim Berry put us level when a good score from play made it 3 points each and later levelled again to draw the game at 4 points each. Shane Howard got the final score of the 1st half to leave us trailing by 0-6 to 0-5 at half time. Gorey got the 1st score of the 2nd half to stretch their lead but 2 goals in a 3-minute spell from Liam Goff and Shane Howard put us firmly in the driving seat on a score line of 2-5 to 0-8. The Gorey men failed to score again as we stretched our lead to eventually win by 2-12 to 0-8. Our full list of scorers were Liam Goff and Shane Howard 1-3 each, Jim Berry 0-3 and Barry Goff, Stephen Nolan and David Mooney 0-1 each. We have now qualified to play Cloughbawn in the final on Wednesday 4th June in Wexford Park.
Our Junior A team continued their preparations for the opening championship game with a good victory over Clongeen in Pairc Carman on Sunday morning.

Our Juveniles played Duffry Rovers in a back fixture in Pairc Carman on Tuesday night last and after an entertaining hour’s hurling, eventually had to settle for a share of the spoils on a score line of 1-11 to 2-8. We started brightly and Con O’Donnagain looked a constant threat early on, before a Duffry goal midway through the half put them into a 3-point lead. An excellent Dean Murphy goal, after some further good work from Con O’Donnagain, saw us lead by just one point at half time. We played our best hurling of the game in the opening 15 mins of the 2nd half and with 15 mins remaining had stretched into a 5-point lead. However the Duffry finished the stronger and a late goal had them back level. We again took the lead in the final minute through a Rhys Clarke free before the Duffry got a deserved equalising point in injury time. After 5 games we now have 2 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats and will possibly have to win both our remaining games versus Rathnure and St. Anne’s in order to qualify for the county semi finals in this grade.
Our Under 14 team are due to play their 3rd championship match in Pairc Carman on Tuesday evening against the Rapparees. We have one win and one defeat from our two games to date.
Our Under 12 team were in action on Friday last when we hosted Oulart in Pairc Carman. After a close, competitive game of hurling, we eventually lost by 2 points, handing us our 2nd defeat in this competition.
Our minor team are not due to commence their campaign until early in July.
Best Wishes
The club would like to wish a speedy recovery to minor players John Cummins and John Walsh, who both suffered serious hand injuries in recent adult league games. Hopefully they will be back in action fairly shortly.
The club would also like to congratulate Joe Kearns on his involvement with the Wexford minor hurling team, who defeated Offaly in last week’s Leinster minor hurling quarter final.
