Our Juvenile team put in a marvellous performance when they reached the semi finals of the Carlow Town 2009 All Ireland Under 16 Blitz tournament. We started off our group games in Bagnelstown with a win against Bennettsbridge of Kilkenny before suffering a one-point loss to Douglas of Cork. This defeat put us under pressure to win the rest of our games and we responded with a wonderful 1-8 to 0-6 win over Eire Og from Nenagh. This meant that qualification from the group would be between ourselves and the previously unbeaten highly rated Na Piarsaigh from Limerick. Our lads turned in our best performance to date and handed out a hurling lesson to the Limerick lads on a scoreline of 4-5 to 0-2.
We then travelled up to Carlow town itself for the Division 1 semi final against Sixmilebridge of Clare. The highly rated Clare lads had already seen off much vaunted opposition, including Dicksboro of Kilkenny. The games were only 10 mins per half and at the interval, we seemed to be well on our way when leading by 1-3 to 0-1. The Clare lads hit us with a whirlwind at the beginning of the 2nd half and were soon ahead however. A Peter Furlong goal in the final minute put us back level but heartbreak was to follow as the Clare lads got the winning point in injury time. We returned home very disappointed but proud of the fact that we had competed so well at the top level and had gone so close to winning the tournament. Our lads were a credit to the club and we can all be very proud of them.
